On October 1, 2026, OpenAI announced that Albertsons Cos. is expanding its use of AI across more than 2,200 stores. These locations include Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, and Tom Thumb, collectively serving over 36 million customers each week.

The collaboration brings a new Safeway experience to ChatGPT, allowing shoppers to start with a recipe, photo, digital list, or text prompt to surface relevant products and savings, build a cart, and check out. According to the announcement, this feature is planned to expand beyond Safeway to other grocery brands owned by the company.

Alongside the customer-facing plugin, Albertsons is utilizing ChatGPT Enterprise and the OpenAI API to build data-driven recommendations, promotional insights, and custom AI workflows. The retailer plans to combine predictive models with generative AI to help merchants evaluate business decisions while streamlining operations across digital shopping, store fulfillment, merchandising, and customer service.
