OpenAI notified SpaceX on August 28, 2026 that it intends to wind down the agreement that supplies OpenAI models inside Cursor, proposing a cutoff of November 12, 2026.

The contract gave OpenAI a limited window to cancel following a change of control, and SpaceX closed its $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, earlier in August. OpenAI said it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use the technology within its terms of service, citing its experience of contract violations by Elon Musk's companies.

Cursor co-founder Michael Truell wrote on X that Cursor was one of the first users of OpenAI's API and that the company is in touch with OpenAI about the decision. He put OpenAI models at roughly 5% of Cursor's user traffic.

For anyone working in Cursor, the practical scope is that one provider: Anthropic and Google models, and Cursor's own Composer, are not part of this contract.
