On September 6, 2026, OpenAI published an update detailing its internal research progress. The company stated it reached its goal of having an automated research intern by September of this year, defining the system as one capable of carrying out well-defined research tasks under human direction, including tasks taking a skilled researcher a few days. OpenAI also stated it is making progress toward creating an automated AI researcher by March of 2028.
Internal metrics indicate that coding agent usage among researchers expanded during 2026. By mid-August, the median researcher ranked by agent usage was using more than $600 per day of inference at API prices, and the 90th percentile user used more than $7,000 of tokens per day. As of mid-August, the research organization used 3.1 agent-workdays of effort for every workday of human labor, whereas total agent runtime was below human labor before June 2026.
OpenAI reported that August 2026 marked an all-time high in experiments per active experimenter since tracking began in Jan 2025. The announcement also noted that after a recent Hugging Face incident, OpenAI paused reinforcement learning (RL) training on its latest models intended for deployment while hardening research environments and expanding monitoring systems.
