Getting Started with AI Tools: A Beginner's Guide
In short: AI tools are apps built on AI models that you can use without any coding - chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, coding assistants, AI search engines, and tools that make images, voice or video. What is an AI tool?
An AI tool is an app or website that lets you use an AI model by typing, talking or uploading a file. The model does the work - writing, answering, drawing, transcribing - and the tool is the window you use it through. ChatGPT is a tool; the GPT models behind it are the models. Claude the app runs Anthropic's Claude models; the Gemini app runs Google's Gemini models.

What kinds of AI tools are there?
Most AI tools fall into six groups, by what they produce.

The lines blur: the main chat assistants can also search the web, look at images and generate pictures, and coding assistants include a chat window.
Are AI tools free?
Many have a free plan with limits, and paid plans that raise them. As of October 2026:
- ChatGPT's pricing page lists a Free plan alongside Go, Plus and Pro.
- Claude's pricing page lists a Free plan at $0, described as "Free for everyone", alongside Pro and Max.
- Google's Gemini plans page lists a Free plan at $0 a month with a Google Account, alongside Google AI Pro and Ultra.
Free plans usually cap how many messages you can send or which model you get. Prices for paid plans differ by country and change often, so the vendor's own page is the place to read the figure in your currency.
How do you start using an AI chat assistant?
Sign up, type a request in plain language, then refine the answer in follow-up messages.
- Create an account on the assistant's website or app. You can use it in a browser or on your phone.
- Start with a real task - a reply to an email, a summary of a long document, an explanation of something you are learning.
- Give it background. Say who the result is for, how long it should be and what it is for. "Explain compound interest in 100 words for a 14-year-old" gets a more useful answer than "explain compound interest". Our prompt engineering guide covers this in detail.
- Ask follow-up questions. "Shorter", "more formal" or "give me three options" is a normal second message - the assistant remembers the conversation so far.
- Attach files when they help. Most assistants accept documents, spreadsheets and images, and can answer questions about them.
What can AI tools do well, and what are their limits?
AI tools are fast at drafting, summarising and explaining, and can be wrong in ways that sound right.
They are commonly used for:
- drafting emails, posts and reports, and rewriting text in a different tone;
- summarising long documents, meetings or articles;
- explaining a topic step by step, at whatever level you ask for;
- translating between languages;
- writing and fixing code;
- brainstorming names, ideas and outlines.
Their known limits:
- Made-up facts. A model can state false information fluently - this is called hallucination. Checking names, numbers, quotes and references against an original source is the standard safeguard. See how LLMs work for why it happens.
- Knowledge cut-off. A model only knows what was in its training data, up to a date, unless the tool searches the web for you.
- Privacy. Whatever you type or upload is sent to the company running the tool. Each vendor's privacy settings and policy say how it is stored and whether it is used for training.
- Marketing claims. "The best" or "the leading" is not a checkable fact; a price, a feature or a benchmark result with its source is. Our model pages show a source link for each spec.
