Perplexity runs a live web search for your question first, then gives the retrieved pages to a language model as source material - retrieval-augmented generation. The answer is grounded in those pages, with numbered citations linking each claim back to its source. Deep research repeats the search-read-write loop many times to build a longer report, and Perplexity Computer builds documents and small apps from a request.

Choosing the model. Paid plans let you pick which model writes the answer. Perplexity lists GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and Grok 4.7, and notes that Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3 run on US-hosted infrastructure (checked 2 October 2026).
