How It Works
Gemini generates responses the same way other chat LLMs do - predicting the reply token by token from your prompt - but is built into Google's own products, so it can ground an answer in a live Search result, pull from a signed-in user's Gmail/Drive/Calendar under Workspace integration, or read an image/screenshot directly. On Android it's wired into the OS assistant layer, letting it act on what's on screen rather than only responding in a chat window.
