OpenAI announced an agreement to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc. on November 4, 2026. OpenAI says the acquisition aims to expand Codex's tools for building, understanding, and reviewing code.

The Codex app currently uses Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries to navigate project files and inspect changes. Pierre's products include a Diffs Edit mode for code fixes and Highlights, a syntax highlighter that updates as code is typed or streamed by an agent. Pierre also designed the API for Code Storage, a service for storing code and tracking history using Git.

OpenAI says it plans to integrate Code Storage functionality into Codex. The company stated that Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source and it will continue to contribute to them. Customers can continue using Code Storage after the acquisition closes. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Until closing, OpenAI and Pierre remain independent companies.
