Microsoft Introduces Education AI Safety Standard and Copilot Metrics

Microsoft outlined five core principles for artificial intelligence in schools and introduced a new framework developed with the American Federation of Teachers, according to Microsoft's announcement.

The agreement established a Privacy & Safety Standard for Schools covering Microsoft Education products. Under the standard, product usage of student and educator data is restricted, human oversight is mandated for consequential decisions, and schools retain ownership of the knowledge and ideas they create. Microsoft also invited other organizations across the technology industry to adopt the standard.

The company framed the measures around five operational principles: safety, privacy, security, and transparency by design; keeping educators at the center of classroom AI use; supporting learning rather than replacing student thinking; strengthening education systems; and preparing students for AI.

For classroom workflows, the company pointed to Teach in Microsoft 365 Copilot, a tool built to assist with lesson planning and differentiated instructional materials. Educators test unreleased tools and offer feedback through the Education Insiders Program prior to release.

The announcement included deployment figures from educational institutions running Microsoft 365 Copilot. Brisbane Catholic Education recorded a 275% increase in learner agency among at-risk cohorts. Miami Dade College reported a 15% increase in student pass rates along with a 12% drop in course dropout rates following its deployment of the system.

Training initiatives were also detailed under Microsoft Elevate for Educators. According to Microsoft, more than 17 million people have completed an AI skills credential over the past year. The program connects teachers with training materials and pathways intended to help educators introduce generative AI tools to students while addressing concerns around cognitive offloading in learning environments.
