Google announced the launch of the Gemini app for Windows on Sep 10, 2026, bringing its desktop application to Windows 10 and Windows 11 globally. The release allows PC users to access AI capabilities directly from their desktop without breaking their existing daily workflow.

The software is designed to run quietly in the background without slowing down the PC. Users can invoke Gemini at any time over their active work screen by pressing the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut. The quick overlay can be used for tasks such as fact-checking documents, generating presentation title ideas, drafting project summaries, managing tasks, or getting assistance with homework.

In addition to the quick shortcut interface, the application includes a dedicated workspace built for deep work and multi-step tasks. Within this workspace, users can delegate multi-step assignments to Gemini Spark, which serves as a 24/7 personal AI agent. The application can also pull information directly from connected Google services, including Gmail and Google Drive, to draft project summaries and organize personal files.

The application also integrates tools for creating custom media from the desktop. Users can generate custom images with Nano Banana for presentation projects, as well as direct high-quality video content using Gemini Omni within the same interface.

Erin Pettigrew, Director of Product Management for the Gemini App, stated that the software is available today globally via gemini.google/desktop. Google indicated that additional native desktop capabilities will continue to roll out over time. Use of the desktop app requires a Google AI subscription, with availability varying by location and usage limited to individuals aged 18+.
