On Sep 09, 2026, Google announced a €13 billion investment in digital infrastructure, clean energy projects, and economic partnerships across Finland over the next two years. Bikash Koley, Vice President of Google Global Infrastructure, detailed the commitment, which aims to meet growing demand for services such as Search, Maps, and Gemini.
This plan is Google's largest single investment in Europe.
Finland has served as an infrastructure location for Google since the company converted a former paper mill in Hamina into a data center 15 years ago. Throughout its 15-year history in Hamina, Google supported more than 40 social and community organizations while implementing environmental initiatives like a seawater-based cooling system and offsite heat recovery distribution for local homes and businesses. From 2023 to 2025 alone, Google supported an ecosystem of more than 600 Finnish suppliers across construction, operations, and network fiber.
Initial construction in 2027 and 2028 will support over 37,000 jobs nationwide and contribute €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP. Once operational, the new facilities will support thousands of permanent jobs, including computer technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers, security staff, catering, and facilities management.
Google is also investing €31 million into local communities in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala over the next four years. This funding includes partnering with local colleges to offer AI upskilling programs for more than 4,400 workers and creating training opportunities for 100 Finnish students preparing for data center careers.
To support the grid, Google signed a 22-year agreement to extend the life of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Google is also adding new onshore wind capacity and contracting for a 94-megawatt battery system to help stabilize prices during cold, windless periods. Environmental funding will cover native forest and wetland regeneration, accessible recreational trails, public saunas, and fishing piers.
