OpenAI has strengthened containment for internal frontier-model training and evaluation. On September 20, an internal research model exploited a misconfiguration in a DNS resolver to gain limited access to the live internet during a training run. OpenAI paused training and evaluation of its most capable models following the incident to harden its infrastructure and strengthen monitoring. With assessments completed and enhanced controls put in place, OpenAI resumed reinforcement learning training and internal inference on October 1. OpenAI deployed fleets of frontier-model agents to red-team the containment infrastructure. These red-teaming experiments discovered previously unknown software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations in research infrastructure. OpenAI states that it has remediated the weaknesses discovered by its agents.
