OpenAI has introduced Images 2.6 across ChatGPT, Codex, and its API to increase generation speed and precision during editing. The API release includes two model variants: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst.

The update adds GIF creation capabilities for animating characters, products, or storyboards. OpenAI states that the model maintains character, product, and brand consistency across edits. According to OpenAI, users generate 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API, averaging more than half a billion images per day.

OpenAI reports that Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than previous versions. In the API, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare can generate images in six seconds at low quality settings, while GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst provides higher-quality generation and consistency at medium or high quality. Flare also improves layout quality for professional visuals.

Developers using the API gain access to image markup and SVG exports. A new complexity parameter allows developers to adjust the model's scene planning effort, with low settings intended for quick edits and medium or high settings for complex scenes.

Images 2.6 is available globally as of November 4, 2026, in ChatGPT and Codex across all subscription tiers. GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst and GPT-Image-2.6 Flare are accessible via the API.
