Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA Form AI Energy Management Alliance
On September 16, 2026, Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA launched the AI Energy Management Alliance to develop data centers capable of adjusting electricity consumption based on power grid conditions, according to NVIDIA's blog post.
The coalition, known as AEMA, focuses on power flexibility to address grid constraints that affect the expansion of U.S. computing infrastructure. Traditional power interconnection frameworks were designed for facilities with steady electricity demand. Flexible data centers are intended to act as controllable power resources by shifting compute workloads, discharging battery storage, relying on paired energy generation, or responding to grid contingencies.
AEMA operates under a technology-neutral, performance-based framework centered on measurable services such as response speed, duration, predictability, and emergency behavior rather than specific hardware or software implementations.
The alliance outlines core operational principles for facility interconnections:
- Defining ride-through, curtailment, and contingency-response obligations before a facility connects to the power grid.
- Standardizing technical requirements, performance metrics, and operational data sharing across the industry.
- Establishing faster, risk-adjusted pathways for facilities that make verifiable operational commitments.
- Allocating interconnection costs according to actual system impacts and grid benefits, including avoided infrastructure upgrades and improved ramping capabilities.
AEMA brings together organizations across the computing and energy sectors, including AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, technology vendors, power producers, utilities, and regional grid operators. Founding members are working alongside launch partners to establish technical standards, collaborate with utilities on interconnection processes, and support policies that recognize grid-responsive electricity demand.
NVIDIA and Emerald AI have previously begun working with energy leaders on flexible facility designs. The new alliance aims to expand these practices into standardized frameworks across the United States.
