Australian universities, including UNSW Sydney, University of Sydney, La Trobe University, and Adelaide University are forging collaborations with OpenAI to give their students and staff access to frontier AI tools.

A survey of 1,018 Australian university students conducted by Pureprofile on behalf of OpenAI between 3–7 August 2026 indicates that 81% of students use AI several times a week. That total includes 33% who use it multiple times each day, while 28% have built an AI agent or assistant to manage their studies, work, or personal life. Additionally, 79% of surveyed students want their university to offer more opportunities to use advanced AI tools on real-world projects. Survey results also show 61% believe AI skills are essential to career success, and 65% believe those skills give Australian graduates an advantage in the global workforce.

UNSW is bringing ChatGPT Edu to more than 80,000 students and staff while integrating generative AI foundations and Codex into educational programs. The University of Sydney is scheduling ChatGPT Edu access for all students in Semester 1, 2027 following a trial, alongside establishing a $1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund.

La Trobe University has provided ChatGPT Edu to all 3,500 staff members and plans universal access for its 45,000 students and staff in the first quarter of 2027. Meanwhile, Adelaide University is using OpenAI Daybreak Blue to conduct authorised defensive security work, covering vulnerability discovery, secure code review, malware analysis, incident response, and patch validation.
