Developers can now bring their preferred models to the IDE through the Visual Studio September Update - Power Your Workflow with Your Model. The Bring Your Own Model capability is in preview and enabled by default across Community, Professional, and Enterprise SKUs, allowing users to connect to Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama, alongside custom endpoints for OpenAI and Ollama.

The update integrates the new Agent Preview built on the GitHub Copilot SDK harness. BYOM now works with the new Agent (Preview). The earlier BYOM experience in the previous Ask and Agent modes is no longer supported, and previously added Ollama models must be re-added.

Additionally, NuGet Audit warnings in the Error List now feature a sparkle action in the Fixer column. This action opens GitHub Copilot Chat in agent mode to resolve vulnerable packages matching warnings NU1901, NU1902, NU1903, or NU1904 using the NuGet MCP server.

The Git agent joins the feature set to assist with pull requests. Developers can connect GitHub or Azure DevOps MCP servers to query pull requests with navigable links opening comments and files directly in the IDE.

Debugging improvements include red and green highlighting for C# if statements using && or || to show which operand determined the result. Furthermore, the Attach to Process feature now supports Podman containers alongside Docker for .NET and C++ debugging.
